Primary prevention

Measures to prevent formation of pterygia are based on protecting the ocular surface from excessive exposure to ultraviolet light by the use of tinted, wraparound sunglasses, and peaked caps or wide-brimmed hats. These measures are especially important in populations residing within 40° latitude of the equator or in desert locations and those who spend long periods outdoors (e.g., sailors, surfers, people with outdoor occupations).
