Patient discussions
Patients should be informed that dry eye disease is usually a chronic condition that requires long-term treatment.[2] This includes regular lid hygiene, applying warm compresses if there is evidence of meibomian gland dysfunction, and compliance with eye drop therapy to protect the ocular surface.[2]
Dry eye syndrome is one of the main reasons for patient dissatisfaction following intraocular refractive and/or cataract surgery. If patients are considering these procedures, caution that symptoms may deteriorate in the first few months and that this can persist beyond 3 months in about one third of individuals.[2] Optimizing treatment before and after these procedures may help.
