Patient discussions

Infection

  • Severely neutropenic patients with an absolute neutrophil count <500/microliter should be advised to seek immediate care for any fever.

  • All patients should be cautioned about risk of extended bleeding with any procedure or injury and advised to present early with fever, infection, weakness, or low energy.

Familial syndromes

  • Patients with inherited syndromes should be advised to inform family members to be alert for symptoms of weakness, pallor, easy bleeding or bruising, or recurrent infections.

  • Early evaluation by a specialist is indicated for any of these signs or symptoms, particularly in children and young adults, as these syndromes tend to present early in life.
