Patient discussions

Patients should have a follow-up for their underlying comorbidities. Surviving an episode of severe Vibrio infection does not produce immunity to subsequent Vibrio infections. Patients at risk (e.g., with underlying hepatic disease or current corticosteroid use or other immunosuppression [HIV, chemotherapy, solid organ transplantation]) should be advised to avoid risky activities (i.e., consuming or handling raw or undercooked shellfish, exposure to marine and estuarial waters).

Survivors of sepsis or septic shock and their families may benefit from referral to peer support groups and post-critical illness follow-up programmes, if available.[35]
