Epidemiology
SD is common, with a prevalence of about 1% to 2% in the general population.[3] Age- and sex-adjusted prevalence in one survey was 10% in boys and 9.5% in girls.[4] The highest prevalence was in the first 3 months of life and decreased rapidly by the age of 1 year, after which there was a slow decline over the next 4 years.[4] Most had minimal to mild SD. Pityriasis capitis, also known as cradle cap, occurred in 42% of the 1116 children examined, with 86% of those affected exhibiting the minimal to mild form only.[4] It is believed that prevalence in older people is higher than in the general population.[5]
