Prognosis
Worsening PPD usually correlates with exacerbations in the underlying psychiatric disorder.[10] Mortality in patients with schizophrenia and PPD is a significant concern. In one 20-year retrospective analysis, schizophrenia patients with polydipsia had a 74% greater chance of dying before patients who had schizophrenia without polydipsia (hazard ratio 2.84, 95% CI 1.22 to 6.64).[85] Complications associated with hyponatremia, such as osteoporotic fractures, rhabdomyolysis, congestive heart failure, and renal failure, contribute to increased morbidity.[10]
