Primary prevention

Patients with risk factors such as psychiatric disorders (particularly schizophrenia) and neurodevelopmental disorders should be closely monitored for excessive water intake and the development of PPD.

Secondary prevention

Given the nature of PPD, the underlying psychiatric disorder or neurodevelopmental disorder should be optimally managed and treated. One report of a patient with refractory depression suggests that excessive water intake may be used to attempt suicide, further highlighting the importance of addressing the underlying condition.[89]
