Prognosis

Mortality associated with acute respiratory failure is often related to a person’s overall health and the potential development of systemic organ dysfunction that can occur with acute illness.[10]

Patients with underlying chronic respiratory disease, including asthma, are at high risk of respiratory failure recurrence and require vigorous follow-up of the causative medical condition once their respiratory failure has been corrected.

Complications of treatment with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), bi-level positive airway pressure (BiPAP), and endotracheal intubation require treatment once patients recover from their acute episodes.

Data from the CDC indicate that survival rates of patients requiring management for respiratory failure are high.[90]
