Monitoring

Patients who have recovered from respiratory failure require close follow-up for the first week after recovery begins. This is to assess for the development of any complications from continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP)/bi-level positive airway pressure (BiPAP) use (e.g., sinus infection, middle ear infection, and skin necrosis) or endotracheal tube use (e.g., tracheal inflammation and nosocomial infection). Further follow-up of patients who have been intubated is necessary to assess for chronic tracheal stenosis and/or nosocomial infection (delayed pneumonia and/or possible lung abscess).[91][92]
