Patient discussions

Patients are advised to follow a calorie-controlled diet, ideally developed with a dietician, to avoid excessive weight gain with corticosteroid use. Patients should be instructed on all relevant adverse effects of the treatments for their disorder, as well as potential long-term complications and prognosis. They should be encouraged to contact their physicians with any new problems or symptoms suggestive either of disease progression or significant medication toxicity.

If taking cyclophosphamide, patients must be educated regarding the risk of hemorrhagic cystitis and be asked to consume 2-3 L of water a day.

Depending on the deficits seen with MNM, a variety of physical therapy interventions may be appropriate. Patients should be encouraged to be active in their rehabilitation.
