Prognosis
Prognosis is generally good. Most patients become euthyroid about 3 months after I-131 treatment, but about 1 in 10 become hypothyroid over 5 years.[37] In patients with toxic MNG, advanced age, larger volume of thyroid gland, and lower iodine uptake level have been proven to be significant predictors of achieving euthyroidism.[47] The prevalence of hypothyroidism increases with time after treatment; in one study, hypothyroidism occurred in 73% of patients treated with radioactive iodine for toxic multinodular goiter at 8 years' follow up.[48]
