Monitoring
After treatment with a compound known to be effective in the location where the patient lives, follow-up is not necessary. For school children, the school nurse can help determine if live lice are present or refer to the health care provider for more extensive examination if warranted. All should be aware that live lice (nymphs) can be present until the correct number of timed treatment cycles have been completed (usually two but dependent on the product or method). If adult lice are seen after treatment is completed, it should be determined if this represents improper administration of the treatment, reinfestation, or a true treatment failure, in which case an alternative treatment should be initiated.
