Primary prevention

A good daily diaper hygiene practice will reduce contact time with potential irritants.[13] Caregivers should be advised to:

  • Change diapers every 2 hours (or at least inspect for soiling every 2 hours) and more frequently in newborns and children with diarrhea

  • Use a commercial cleansing wipe or water on cotton cloth to cleanse the diaper area; products with minimal additives should be used

  • Avoid excess detergents and friction

  • Have time without diapers

  • Avoid use of plastic underpants over diapers.

Secondary prevention

Continuation of good diapering hygiene practices.[13]

Studies have favored:[24]

  • cellulose-core disposable diapers over cloth

  • absorbent gelling material over cellulose-core diapers

  • breathable outer shell diapers over occlusive outer shell diapers, and

  • linings impregnated with formulations over plain linings.

Many of these individual studies were, however, open study design and therefore at risk of bias.
