Patient discussions

Reinforce good nappy-changing hygiene practices with the carer.[13]

  • No matter which type of nappy is used, change nappy every 2 hours or at least inspect for soiling every 2 hours.

  • Change nappies even more frequently in newborns and children with diarrhoea.

  • Eliminate irritants at each nappy change by cleansing nappy area with commercial cleansing wipes or water on cotton cloth.

  • Use products with minimal additives.

  • Avoid excess friction and detergents.

  • If child is prone to frequent nappy rash, empirically apply topical barrier containing zinc oxide, soft paraffin jelly, glycerin, or mineral oil.

  • Allow for nappy-free time whenever practical.

  • Avoid use of plastic underpants over nappy.
