Epidemiology

The majority of newborns display some skin breakdown in the diaper area by 1 week of age, with increasing severity by 3 weeks.[2] Diaper rash most commonly occurs in the first year of life, but can occur up to 2 years of age. Approximately half of all children will have rash at some time during their diaper-wearing years.[3] In one study, half of all participants ages 2-4 years had experienced at least one diaper rash, while 17.6% had a diaper rash in the past 6 weeks.[4] Another study noted that approximately one quarter of hospitalized children had some skin breakdown; the majority of cases were located on the buttocks, perineum, and occiput.[5] It is one of the most common dermatologic conditions that prompts caregivers to seek medical care for their children at emergency medical facilities.[6]
