Patients should complete the regimen of antibiotics as prescribed. Patients should contact their physician if they develop severe abdominal pain, confusion or decreased consciousness, persistent or high fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes, poor appetite, or other new symptoms during or after treatment. Instructions concerning appropriate drain care are required for patients who leave hospital with a drain in place. Community healthcare workers specialized in drain management are frequently available to provide support at home.
