Primary prevention

Regular stretching to counteract lower-extremity inflexibility that commonly occurs during periods of rapid growth in adolescents is essential to prevent OSD and other lower extremity overuse syndromes. Stretching prior to participation in sports as well as gradual and judicious increase in intensity and duration of athletic activity are strongly recommended.

Specific stretches should involve the following muscle groups:[6]

  • Quadriceps

  • Hamstrings

  • Iliotibial band.
