Early fusion of the anterior portion of the proximal tibial epiphysis can lead to a recurvatum (hyperextension) deformity at the knee.
This may further result in a high-riding patella (patella alta), thus increasing joint reactive forces at the patellofemoral articulation, and potentially leading to early osteoarthritis of that joint.
