Severe cases of high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) and high-altitude cerebral edema (HACE) may result in coma. These patients require immediate intubation and ventilation, together with all of the supportive measures typically needed in a comatose patient.

Rarely occurs with HACE. Must be differentiated from epilepsy. Treated with anticonvulsant drugs in addition to typical HACE management.

Rarely, patients may have long-term neurologic deficits if HACE is severe or prolonged.
