Patient discussions
Patients should be informed of the importance of a quick evaluation when presenting with sudden onset of testicular torsion to prevent testicular loss and improve their chances of maintaining testicular viability and fertility.
Patients with a past history of testicular fixation should be made aware of the possibility of recurrent torsion and the importance of urgent urologic consultation if signs and symptoms of testicular torsion appear.
Following orchidectomy patients and/or their caregivers should be informed about delayed side effects and options for future prosthetic replacement. For patients who had orchidopexy the risk of late testicular atrophy, including risks to fertility, should be explained.[11]
All patients should be informed how to access appropriate psychologic support.[11]
Hormonal treatment following loss of both testicles will be needed to produce appropriate pubertal development of secondary sex characteristics.
