Prognosis

The prognosis for most corneal abrasions is excellent, with most small defects healing within 24-48 hours. Corneal epithelialization may take 4-5 days for lesions affecting more than 50% of the corneal surface area.[8] Corneal ulceration and keratitis are the most severe complications.[18] A small percentage of abrasions are recalcitrant to healing and may require debridement by an ophthalmologist to promote proper healing.[Figure caption and citation for the preceding image starts]: Corneal ulcer seen with fluorescein stainCourtesy of Dr Jonathan Smith, Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK; Dr Philip Severn, Sunderland Eye Infirmary, Tyne and Wear, UK; and Dr Lucy Clarke, Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK [Citation ends].com.bmj.content.model.Caption@3da1bae5
