Primary prevention

Because most corneal epithelial defects occur from direct trauma and foreign bodies, protective eyewear in high-risk environments should be encouraged. Safety goggles or glasses are appropriate in a variety of workplace environments. Prescription glasses or sunglasses might be helpful in preventing injury in other circumstances, such as hiking and walking through dense bush.

Contact lenses should be removed when the eye and lens are well hydrated and then cleaned properly. Ill-fitting lenses should be replaced. Contact lens wearers should be encouraged to attend regular eye checks.
