Test of cure, with a follow-up throat culture or rapid antigen test for group A Streptococcus (GAS), is not routinely required except in patients who are at high risk of acute renal failure or who have recurrence of symptoms compatible with GAS.[1] However, a test of cure is desirable in patients treated for gonococcal pharyngitis. If pharyngitis symptoms have not improved after 3 to 4 days, alternate diagnoses should be considered.
