Emerging treatments

Dupilumab in atopic dermatitis patients

Dupilumab, a recombinant human monoclonal antibody that inhibits interleukin-4 and interleukin-13 signaling, is used in the treatment of severe atopic dermatitis. Observational studies suggest that dupilumab can clear recalcitrant molluscum infections and cause dissemination of molluscum.[28][29][30][31]

Photodynamic therapy in HIV-positive patients

Photodynamic therapy using aminolevulinic acid has been described in six patients with HIV and molluscum who were resistant to traditional therapy.[32]

Ingenol mebutate

Appears to be promising as an agent for the treatment of molluscum contagiosum.[33] It is currently approved only for the treatment of actinic keratosis. Ingenol mebutate has been compared with imiquimod in a small unblinded study.[34]
