A 55-year-old woman with overweight presents for preventive care. She notes that her mother died of complications of diabetes, but reports no polyuria, polydipsia, or weight loss. BP is 144/92 mmHg, fasting blood glucose 148 mg/dL (8.2 mmol/L), HbA1c 8.1% (65 mmol/mol), LDL-cholesterol 200 mg/dL (5.17 mmol/L), HDL-cholesterol 30 mg/dL (0.78 mmol/L), and triglycerides 252 mg/dL (2.85 mmol/L).
Other presentations
Patients with type 2 diabetes can also present with symptoms such as increased urination, thirst, and appetite; unexplained weight loss; blurred vision; fatigue; paresthesias; or urinary tract or candidal infections.
Hyperglycemic crisis (i.e., diabetic ketoacidosis or hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state) is the first presentation of diabetes in a subset of patients.[3]
