Patient discussions
Advise patients to keep the rash clean and dry to reduce the risk of bacterial superinfection. Patients should also avoid topical antibiotics or dressings with adhesive that may cause irritation and may delay healing of the rash. In addition, they should avoid wearing clothing made from irritating fibers (e.g., wool). Counsel patients about the possible complication of postherpetic pain and offer advice on how to psychologically manage chronic pain (e.g., with relaxation techniques and counseling). Referral to a pain management specialist is indicated if the pain interferes with daily living.
