Prognosis

Respiratory illnesses from enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) tend to be brief and self-limited, and recovery is complete. Most patients with asthma exacerbations respond relatively quickly to standard asthma therapies. It is not known how often children get reinfected or if year-to-year strain variation contributes to reinfection. By adulthood, however, there is significant population immunity and symptomatic disease is rare.

Recovery from acute flaccid myelitis may be prolonged and is often incomplete. A definitive association has not yet been established between infection with EV-D68 and acute flaccid myelitis.[11]
