Prognosis

Prognosis for treatment of most tinea infections is excellent. However, individuals who are immunocompromised may have persistent infection or occasionally develop invasive dermatophyte disease.

Onychomycosis is the most difficult of the tinea infections to treat. Only 30% to 60% of people will report a clinical cure following treatment with oral antifungals.[48] A recurrence or reinfection rate of 20% to 50% is high enough to warrant periodic re-evaluation every few months during and after completion of treatment.[69]
