Prognosis

The prognosis for a patient with Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) is dependent upon the underlying cause of the dysfunction. If it is associated with an anatomic obstruction that can be surgically corrected, then the surgery should take care of the problem. If it is present in childhood, there is a significant probability that, as the Eustachian tube matures into adult location and the surrounding muscles mature, the ETD will resolve. If it is secondary to allergic or sinonasal inflammatory conditions, then treatment of those conditions may resolve the ETD. If the cause is idiopathic, the chance for resolution is unclear and unpredictable.
