nasal endoscopy
Test
Routine part of an otolaryngologist's assessment of a patient with ETD.[Figure caption and citation for the preceding image starts]: A normal left Eustachian tube as seen endoscopically from the posterior nasal cavity. From the collection of Edward D. McCoul; used with permission [Citation ends].
Result
edema or obstruction of the Eustachian tube orifice, mucus flowing over Eustachian tube orifice, presence of adenoid tissue involving the surface of the Eustachian tube
tympanometry
Test
Routine part of an otolaryngologist's assessment of a patient with ETD.
A type B tympanogram shows a flat compliance curve, demonstrating no movement of the tympanic membrane. This usually is indicative of fluid filling the middle ear cleft, as sequela of ETD.
A type C tympanogram shows a shift of the compliance curve, with negative pressure, demonstrating a malfunctioning Eustachian tube.
Result
type B or C tympanogram; quantitative values of tympanometric peak pressure may provide more specific information than morphologic categorization
