Patient discussions
Patients should be informed that trichinellosis is caused by eating raw or undercooked meat of infected animals. Provide information on methods to render potentially contaminated meat suitable for human consumption.[35]
Although patients are not at risk of transmitting the disease to others, members of their household or community may also have been exposed to the infection by eating the same meat source.
Patients should be informed that the disease usually resolves within 6 weeks to 6 months of infection depending on the parasitic load.
Patients should be advised to contact their healthcare providers if, after release from the hospital, they develop persistent fever, palpitations, lower extremity swelling, abnormal mental status, neurologic deficits, or persistence of their symptoms beyond a period of weeks.
