Secondary prevention

Adherence to treatment is imperative. Nonadherence to the medication regimen may lead to relapse. The earlier the symptoms are treated, the less likely they are to recur. A practitioner should be notified immediately on symptom recurrence.

The following may help decrease symptoms and/or prevent relapse:

  • Stress management techniques such as yoga, deep breathing, meditation, or other relaxation techniques.[41]

  • Avoidance of alcohol and caffeine, as use of these is correlated with an increase in stress.

  • Getting adequate physical activity, as exercise can decrease stress, lower blood pressure, and improve general health.[42]
