Brief psychotic disorder

Once all symptoms have resolved and antipsychotic medication has been discontinued, the patient should be seen at least monthly for the first several months to assess any symptom recurrence. If symptoms return, another diagnosis, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, should be considered and longer-term treatment may be necessary.
