Complications
The prevalence of suicide in brief psychotic disorder (BPD) is approximately 35.7%.[24] Early identification of risk factors is essential in order to manage psychiatric disorders. The most common risk factors for suicide in BPD are a higher education level and impulsivity (measured as the negative side of "conscientiousness" on the NEO Five-Factor Inventory).[24] The most common risk factors for suicide in postpartum women are a history of psychiatric disorders and family history of psychiatric disorders.[25]
Second-generation antipsychotics may be associated with weight gain. Nutritional and exercise counseling should be initiated to prevent or minimize weight gain.
Second-generation antipsychotics may be associated with hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia. Although a short duration of treatment is generally indicated, which may minimize these effects, patients should be educated about the potential adverse effects.
