Oropharyngeal cancer, American Joint Committee on Cancer: staging criteria[41]

The American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging system is now in its 8th edition. The 8th edition of the criteria brought with it major changes to the staging of oropharyngeal cancer, including one set of criteria for human papillomavirus (HPV)-positive patients and another set of criteria for HPV-negative patients.

Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status[71]

Criteria used by researchers to assess functional status of the patient and to select appropriate treatment.

  • Grade 0: fully active, able to carry on all predisease performance without restriction.

  • Grade 1: restricted in physically strenuous activity but ambulatory and able to carry out work of a light or sedentary nature - for example, light house work, office work.

  • Grade 2: ambulatory and capable of all self-care but unable to carry out any work activities; up and about >50% of waking hours.

  • Grade 3: capable of only limited self-care, confined to bed or chair >50% of waking hours.

  • Grade 4: completely disabled, cannot carry on any self-care; totally confined to bed or chair.

  • Grade 5: dead.
