Monitoring
In adolescents with varicocele, serial exams must be done yearly until testicular growth is complete.[23] For adolescent patients with treated varicocele, close monitoring for varicocele recurrence and testicular atrophy is required.
US guidelines suggest that adult men with a palpable asymptomatic varicocele and normal semen parameters can be observed with serial semen analyses every 1 to 2 years to identify those men who may eventually show signs of impaired testicular function.[30] If repair is performed, a physical exam and a semen analysis should be performed every 3 months for the first year. Improvements in semen parameters are often seen at 6 to 9 months.
