Non-small cell lung cancer UICC/AJCC/IASLC staging (8th edition, 2016)
The full staging system is available from the International Union Against Cancer (UICC), the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC), and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC).[100][101][102] The 8th edition of the cancer staging system was published in 2016.[103][104]
The UICC/AJCC/IASLC staging system describes the extent of disease based on the following anatomic factors: size and extent of the primary tumor (T); regional lymph node involvement (N); and presence or absence of distant metastases (M).[104]
The Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status[105]
These scales and criteria are used by doctors and researchers to assess how a patient's disease is progressing, assess how the disease affects the daily living abilities of the patient, and determine appropriate treatment and prognosis:
Grade 0: fully active, able to carry on all predisease performance without restriction
Grade 1: restricted in physically strenuous activity but ambulatory and able to carry out work of a light or sedentary nature: for example, light house work, office work
Grade 2: ambulatory and capable of all self-care but unable to carry out any work activities; up and about >50% of waking hours
Grade 3: capable of only limited self-care, confined to bed or chair >50% of waking hours
Grade 4: completely disabled, cannot carry on any self-care; totally confined to bed or chair
Grade 5: deceased.
