Epidemiology
Adhesive capsulitis is a rare condition that affects 2% to 5% of people during their lifetime, occurring most commonly in people between 40 and 70 years of age.[1] One meta-analysis found patients with diabetes mellitus were 5 times more likely to have adhesive capsulitis.[6]
Adhesive capsulitis is slightly more common in women than in men, but no exact male to female ratio has been established. One questionnaire study including 9696 randomly selected adults reported that frozen shoulder affected 8.2% of men and 10.1% of women of working age.[7] Between 20% and 30% of women with existing adhesive capsulitis will be affected in the contralateral shoulder.[8] There is no known ethnicity preponderance.[1]
