Prognosis
Most patients with transient halitosis ultimately have some or complete resolution of symptoms following simple oral procedures. Those with persistent oral malodor secondary to dental, oral, nasopharyngeal, respiratory, gastrointestinal, and other systemic disease will have a reduction of altered breath smell following treatment of their underlying disease. Unfortunately there remains no effective therapy for the unpleasant odor due to some metabolic disorders (e.g., trimethylaminuria).
