A 55-year-old man presents with a complaint of halitosis. His wife confirms the presence of bad breath that has progressively worsened in the last few years. He has been smoking 20 cigarettes a day for approximately 30 years. His medical history is unremarkable. He has not had regular dental exams for several years but he is planning to see his dentist as some of his teeth are mobile and his gingivae bleed easily.

A 50-year-old woman presents with a complaint of halitosis. She has been diagnosed with breast cancer and is receiving chemotherapy. She has had extensive oral ulceration due to mucositis and has not been able to brush her teeth because of severe pain associated with the ulceration.
