Epidemiology
The incidence of dysbarism is difficult to determine because many cases go unreported or are misdiagnosed, and figures for the total number of active divers vary wildly. The recreational industry estimates 3.2 million people dive at least once a year in the US, although only one third of these are regular participants.[6] In recreational divers, Divers Alert Network (DAN) estimates the incidence of decompression illness to be between 2 and 4 in 10,000 dives.[7]
