Primary prevention
WAS is inherited in an X-linked manner. Mutation analysis for other family members, either if family history is suggestive of WAS or to detect carrier status, allows for informed decisions around family planning and early diagnosis.
Secondary prevention
Pneumococcal vaccine is recommended pre-splenectomy for all children <2 years, and for unimmunised children aged between 24 and 59 months old who are at high risk for pneumococcal infections, unless they are on immunoglobulin therapy. Splenectomy necessitates penicillin prophylaxis for life.
