Primary prevention

Wearing gloves has been shown to protect gardeners from acquiring sporotrichosis.[30]

Secondary prevention

Patients with HIV and other immunocompromised conditions who develop meningeal or disseminated sporotrichosis should receive lifelong suppressive itraconazole therapy after completion of treatment to prevent clinical relapse. In HIV-positive patients with disseminated sporotrichosis, if the CD4 count increases to >200 cells/mm³ for >1 year and if the patient has received at least 1 year of itraconazole treatment, discontinuation of secondary prophylaxis antifungal therapy may be considered.
