Amphotericin B deoxycholate is more likely to cause renal impairment compared with lipid formulations of amphotericin B (i.e., a 50% versus 20% to 30% reduction in glomerular filtration rates may be seen following 4 weeks of amphotericin B deoxycholate or lipid formulation of amphotericin B therapy, respectively). Renal impairment is dose dependent and its incidence increases with increasing amphotericin B treatment duration. It manifests as rising creatinine, azotaemia, non-anion gap renal tubular acidosis, hypokalaemia, and hypomagnesaemia. Aggressive hydration and electrolyte repletion are necessary during amphotericin B therapy.[56]
