Monitoring

Children with peri-orbital cellulitis should be seen daily on oral antibiotics, or should be admitted if frequent visits are not feasible.[34] Adults may be monitored on an outpatient basis while being treated with oral antibiotics. If the concern of progression to orbital cellulitis is high, daily visits are recommended. If there are no other risk factors, adults with early stages of peri-orbital cellulitis may be followed every 2-4 days. Patients with orbital cellulitis should be admitted for intravenous antibiotics and followed closely during the first days of admission. Once improvement is noted, patients can be followed daily and eventually discharged on oral antibiotics if needed (i.e., if residual signs of infection remain).
