Patient discussions
Photoprotection (avoidance of ultraviolet radiation [UVR] exposure) if possible.
Use of UVR-protective clothing.
Use of sunscreens containing a high UV-A/UV-B filter (SPF 25 and higher) and antioxidants.
If photoprotection is not possible, adaptation by slowly increasing UVR to induce natural hardening is advised.
Recommend UVR phototherapy at the start of the year or before going on sunny holidays, to achieve hardening.
Use of mild topical steroids when first symptoms of PLE apparent, and photoprotection.
Patient should consult a doctor when skin changes last >1 week, to confirm the diagnosis.
Patient should consult a doctor when mild topical steroids do not help to alleviate symptoms.
