Patient discussions

Patients should be aware that this is a chronic infection.

Seropositive patients who are immunosuppressed who take trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole as primary prophylaxis significantly reduce their risk of developing symptomatic disease.

HIV-infected patients should be informed that taking antiretroviral therapy, with a subsequent rise in CD4+ T lymphocytes >200 cells/microlitre, will protect them from future episodes of symptomatic disease and will allow them to stop chronic suppressive therapy.

Immunocompetent women infected during pregnancy should know they are not at risk for transmitting disease during future pregnancies.
