Primary prevention

  • Enteroviruses are spread by the faecal-oral route and hand washing may help prevent infection.[2]

  • Arboviral infection may be prevented by avoiding vectors (ticks or mosquitoes): for example, insecticide-treated bed nets.[4]

  • Infants are routinely immunised for mumps.[4]

Secondary prevention

Aciclovir/valaciclovir should not routinely be given as prophylaxis for recurrent viral meningitis because these agents have not been shown to decrease the risk of recurrence.[2][74]
