Viral meningitis is one of the most common infections of the central nervous system. It is difficult to estimate the number of cases because symptoms are often so mild they are mistaken for flu, and many do not undergo diagnostic lumbar puncture. Viruses are the most commonly identified cause of meningitis in UK adults.[6]McGill F, Griffiths MJ, Bonnett LJ, et al. Incidence, aetiology, and sequelae of viral meningitis in UK adults: a multicentre prospective observational cohort study. Lancet Infect Dis. 2018 Sep;18(9):992-1003.

The incidence of viral meningitis in the UK has been estimated at 2.73 per 100,000, compared with 1.24 per 100,000 for bacterial meningitis.[6]McGill F, Griffiths MJ, Bonnett LJ, et al. Incidence, aetiology, and sequelae of viral meningitis in UK adults: a multicentre prospective observational cohort study. Lancet Infect Dis. 2018 Sep;18(9):992-1003.

Although most cases resolve without treatment, viral meningitis is responsible for a significant number of hospitalisations. In the US in 2006 approximately 40,000 people with viral meningitis were admitted to hospital.[8]Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Meningitis-related hospitalizations in the United States, 2006. July 2008 [internet publication].

Viral meningitis affects all ages but is most commonly diagnosed in children. No difference in incidence has been described among people of different ethnic groups. Males appear to be affected more commonly than females.[9]Lee KY, Burgner D, Lee HS, et al. The changing epidemiology of pediatric aseptic meningitis in Daejeon, Korea from 1987 to 2003. Enteroviruses are the cause of the majority of cases.[9]Lee KY, Burgner D, Lee HS, et al. The changing epidemiology of pediatric aseptic meningitis in Daejeon, Korea from 1987 to 2003. BMC Infect Dis. 2005 Nov 2;5:97.

Arboviruses are responsible for a substantial proportion of non-enteroviral viral meningitis.[7]Kohil A, Jemmieh S, Smatti MK, et al. Viral meningitis: an overview. Arch Virol. 2021 Feb;166(2):335-45.

In North America the incidence of arboviral infection is maximal in the summer and autumn when the mosquito or tick vectors are most active.[7]Kohil A, Jemmieh S, Smatti MK, et al. Viral meningitis: an overview. Arch Virol. 2021 Feb;166(2):335-45.

Many arboviruses are confined to a particular geographical area; this range may change, as the emergence of the West Nile virus infection in Europe and North America demonstrates.[11]Khetsuriani N, Lamonte-Fowlkes A, Oberst S, et al.
