This is a rare complication. It presents with symptoms of a septic bursitis: warmth, erythema, and local swelling if a superficial bursa is affected. Treatment is with antibiotics for up to 4 weeks. Broad-spectrum cover for staphylococci and streptococci is advised. Directed therapy can be started when culture results are available.

This is a rare complication but more common in the larger tendons such as the Achilles. Surgical repair would usually be indicated.

It is possible, but not common, for infection to spread from a bursa into a joint in close proximity. Typically, the aspirate from an infected joint would have a higher white blood cell count, and both active and passive ranges of movement would be severely restricted. Treatment is with surgical lavage and debridement.
